Madeleine: „Die from Within“ steht sowohl Rikard als auch mir sehr nahe.

Stay true, stay metal!

— ENGLISH VERSION —

Over a month has passed since symphonic metal band ELEINE released their third album „Dancing in Hell„. Time for us to talk to singer Madeleine and guitarist and singer Rikard about their newest creation, the close bond with their fans and the currently bitter topic of „touring“.

First of all, congratulations on another amazing album! „Dancing in Hell“ came out really good and was very well-received so far. Which song was the most challenging for you to write?

Rikard: Thank  you very much! We are very happy with the massive response we’ve gotten from fans, critics and colleagues in the music business alike. Well, there was no track that was more challenging than the other in that aspect. We write about what we know, what we feel and what we see. It’s all boils down to staying true to yourself.

Madeleine: Thank  you very much! It’s all very exhilarating. All tracks are a piece of us and we always write what feels right. That in itself can sometimes be a challenge.

Because „Die From Within“ already is one of the softer, more melodic songs, why did you decide to make a symphonic version of it?

M: „Die From Within“ is very close to both Rikard and myself. Everything we write has pieces of ourselves in it, and many of our songs are about struggle and finding strength. „Die From Within“ is about experiencing loss. Rikard poured in so much of himself into the orchestral arrangements in „Die From Within“ and we wanted to highlight this song.

How did the pandemic influence the creation of your new album?

R: It didn’t really. We wrote the album before the pandemic, and whilst we did the recordings in April/May it didn’t affect the process. An album has to be completed long before to get everything in place for the actual release. What did change in our planning was that we added singles and music videos. So instead of two singles/music videos, we did four.

With the growing importance of the media and the fight for attention, visual elements like stage outfits or face paint have become very popular among metal bands. What can you tell me about your outfits and make up? What is the idea behind it and what do you want to express with it?

R: Those things aren’t in the least new or has come about in the last 30 years even. Stage outfits and/or makeup has been a part of music for a very long time. Just look at Kiss, King Diamond, Dee Snider, Freddie Mercury and Marilyn Manson to name a few. It’s an extension of the music and it heightens the stage expression.

You have been using Patreon for quite a while now which allows your fans to give you additional financial support for your musical projects in ELEINE. What do you think about this new way of band support in general and how well does it work for you?

M: Patreon is not and additional support for musical projects in ELEINE, it’s direct support for ELEINE. We’ve been using the platform for about a year and a half and are now over a 100 patrons! HUGE! While it’s true that Patreon allows fans to directly give financial support to their favorite artists, it’s so much more than that.

It’s a much closer experience than other social medias and there are also many perks to be had such as discounts, virtual hangouts etc.We can only speak for ourselves, and our Patreon page builds a community based on a shared passion for metal and giving each other strength. Our patrons help to keep us motivated and helps us continue to stay creative. Which in the end is what we all want. Feel free to check it out!

Due to the pandemic your European tour supporting Myrath had to be cancelled… I’m sure you are already excited to go back on tour again and would probably love to play „Dancing in Hell“ in its entirety – but is there a song that you are especially excited to play live? Why this particular one?

M: It’s important to remember the three weeks we managed to tour instead of focusing that the remaining two were cancelled. Those three weeks were GREAT! We performed in countries we hadn’t before and revisited some. Above all we gained a lot of new fans.

R: Yes, we’re aching to tour again. Just wherever you know, right now I think that all bands are excited by the thought to play at all.

Is there also something about touring that you do not miss?

M: No.

R: Nope. Whilst it isn’t easy in the least bit, it is what we love doing.

In 2014 you released your debut album and played your first live show. Within those six years you have already reached a lot including a globally spread fanbase, you have established your own record label and supported big bands like Moonspell and Arch Enemy. What do you think makes the members in Eleine work so well as a band?

R: The first show was in 2014, but the first album didn’t come until 2015. Thank you very much, we believe in hard work. Yes, we have our own label, but only have the debut album „ELEINE“ and our sophomore album „Until the End“ there. We’re currently signed to Black Lodge records and have released EP „All Shall Burn“ and „Dancing in Hell“ there. We work well together since we have a mutual goal for ELEINE and believe in hard work.

Thank you so much for taking the time! Is there anything else you want to say to your fans?

M+R: We love you all, thank you for listening to ELEINE and for buying our music. Can’t wait to meet you when the world opens up again. Stay true, stay metal!
